Yoga and Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a special time. Maternal health can be maintained and improved by non-violent exercise such as yoga.

Pregnancy and motherhood are both physically and psychologically demanding. One way to help stabilize the physical and mental states is by practicing yoga. Through the practice of yoga asanas, or postures, the pregnancy is made more comfortable. The postures strengthen the pelvic muscles, expanding the cavity of the pelvic region to create space inside the uterus for proper blood circulation, and adequate room for movement of the fetus. The yoga asanas also exercise the spine and aid digestion, breathing and circulation. Asanas also ease morning sickness, alleviate swelling and prevent varicose veins. The uterus is exercised to become strong and to function more efficiently so that delivery has more potential to be normal. Yoga greatly helps lactation by providing for important gland stimulation and oxygenation for the reproduction of milk.

After delivery yoga helps the body get back into shape, bringing firmness to the muscle fibers and calming the mind.
